We're looking for a Senior Python Developer who can own backend architecture end to end - designing scalable services, modernising legacy systems, and building the automation and AI-powered tooling that makes the rest of the business faster.
This is a hands-on engineering role with real scope. You'll work across product, data, and platform boundaries, partnering directly with data scientists, product managers, and stakeholders rather than picking up tickets from a queue. We want someone comfortable operating in ambiguity: minimal documentation, unclear edges, and the judgement to self-direct investigation and delivery.
The role is fully remote and engaged on a full-time contract basis, reporting directly to management.
What you'll do
- Design and build scalable backend services and APIs in Python, from architecture through to production deployment.
- Lead the modernisation of legacy systems, improving modularity, performance, and maintainability.
- Build automation pipelines and internal tooling that remove manual effort and reduce operational cost.
- Integrate LLMs and AI capabilities into production products, including RAG pipelines and AI gateway/routing infrastructure.
- Deploy and operate cloud-native systems using infrastructure as code.
- Partner with data scientists, engineers, and product stakeholders to turn ambiguous problems into shipped solutions.
- Set the technical bar for the team through code review, testing discipline, and architectural decisions.
Essential experience
- 8+ years professional software engineering experience, with Python as your primary language.
- Experience and proactive person who can lead the team.
- Proven track record designing scalable backend architectures, not just maintaining them.
- Strong experience with modern Python web frameworks (Flask, Django, or FastAPI).
- Hands-on cloud experience with at least one major provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and comfort working across others.
- Experience building automation pipelines and API-driven integrations.
- Containerisation and orchestration - Docker, and ideally Kubernetes.
- Infrastructure as code (Terraform or equivalent) and CI/CD practices.
- Solid testing discipline - TDD or equivalent rigour.
- Experience leading projects or initiatives, including large-scale migrations from legacy to modern stacks.
- Comfortable in Agile, cross-functional teams, working directly with non-engineering stakeholders.
Desirable
- Production experience with LLMs and AI integration - RAG, OpenAI or Bedrock APIs, LLM gateways and routing (e.g. LiteLLM).
- Fluency with agentic development tooling - Cursor, Claude Code, n8n.
- Data engineering exposure: dbt, Airflow, Snowflake, Kafka, ELT pipeline design.
- TypeScript and front-end familiarity (React, Next.js, or Vue) for full-stack contribution.
- Experience in regulated environments - fintech, health-tech, GDPR, or medical compliance.
- Background spanning both startup/scale-up and enterprise environments.
- Microservices architecture at scale.
